Das Städtchen Auma liegt am gleichnamigen Fluss Auma, einem Zufluss der Weida und damit der Weißen Elster im Thüringer Vogtland. Auma befindet sich etwa mittig zwischen den Unterzentren Weida und Schleiz. 2006 feierte die Stadt ihr 675jähriges Jubiläum.
Auma liegt an der B 2 von Gera nach Schleiz. Westlich der Stadt verläuft die A 9 mit den Abfahrten Triptis (für die Anfahrt aus Richtung Berlin) und Dittersdorf (für die Anfahrt aus Richtung München). Nächstgelegener Bahnanschluss ist in Triptis.
Auma mit seinen nur 2400 Einwohnern ist schnell zu Fuß durchquerbar.
Am Marktplatz, der bei der Fahrt auf der B 2 durch die Stadt ziemlich unerwartet auf der Westseite erscheint, die Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten: Gleich vorne links das Alte Rathaus (neu erbaut 1790), links daneben auf der anderen Straßenseite das Neue Rathaus (1907/08), auf der vorderen Mitte des Marktplatzes eine kursächsische Postmeilensäule und ganz hinten die Franz-Kolbe-Regelschule (1900).
Rechts hinter der Kolbeschule eine Tafel mit Wanderkarte. Am Ostrand der Stadt ein Planetenwanderweg in Richtung Merkendorf.
Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten gibt es nicht direkt in Auma, sondern nur in den umliegenden Dörfern.
Triptis (4 km nordwestlich) - am Ostrand der Orlasenke und direkt an der A 9 gelegene Kleinstadt; erhaltener Bergfried der Burg Triptis. Zeulenroda-Triebes (9 km südöstlich) - an der gleichnamigen Talsperre gelegen; klassizistisches Rathaus und Spaßbad „Waikiki“. Im Ortsteil Triebes: Winkelmannsches Haus, in Blockbauweise errichtet. Weida (16 km nordöstlich, über Staitz) - mit der Osterburg und der sehenswerten Ruine der Widenkirche. Ein technisches Wunderwerk ist die stillgelegte Stahlbrücke der Bahnlinie nach Hof. Auf der Fahrt nach Weida Sicht auf die Weidatalsperre südlich von Staitz. Schleiz (17 km südlich, B 2) - Autorennbahn „Schleizer Dreieck“, ehemalige Residenz der reußischen Schleizer Linie.
