It is the seat of Gülşehir District. Its population is 12,474 (2022). The average elevation of the town is 885 m (2,904 ft) above sea level.

Das kleine Städtchen zählt ca.10.000 Einwohner und liegt am Kızılırmak. Das Stadtlogo zeigt eine pilzförmige Tuffsteinformation, die sich 7 km außerhalb befindet. Hethitiche Funde weisen auf eine Gründung im 2.Jahrtausend vor Christus hin. Unter römischer Regentschaft hieß der Ort Zoropassos, in späterer Zeit dan Arabsun, und wurde unter türkischer Regie in Gülşehir unbenannt.
